Love, Medicine, and Orange Ginger Chicken

What Our Sous Chef Kitten, Ka-En the Firecracker, Taught me on his "Gotcha Day."

Hello Reader,It's Yukari!

Oh, how I wish I could have sent this email sooner. I feel like I haven't connected with you for a long time, but I sprained my ankle in a fluke accident, and everything had to have a little setback. Aghh! Now I'm back to somewhat normal (still limping a bit, but I can move! Yay!), so let me pick up where it left off!

We celebrated a special milestone a few weeks ago—our sweet Sous Chef Kitten, Ka-En's second Gotcha Day! 🐾

This year's celebration looked a little different from last year's celebration.

Ka-En has been bravely battling an autoimmune condition, for which our vet recommended a strictly prescribed food only, no treats.

It broke our hearts... but it also taught us something powerful about trust, healing, and the little joys that help us through the hard days.

In our latest blog, I share the full story of:

  • How Ka-En's health condition changed the way we clean and cook at home 🧽
  • Why I became “the crazy lady with the syringe" from "Hiper-Helicopter Mom." 😂
  • And how a toy Sloth, butcher's twine, and one resilient cat reminded me of the kind of love that sticks around—even when things get messy.🧡

We also honored Ka-En's ginger tabby spirit with something special in the kitchen:

🍊 Pan-Seared Chicken Thighs with Orange Ginger Butter Sauce—a dish inspired by a special "orange" cat with a little bit of spiciness and sweetness. Don't worry. I made sure you get this special recipe! (It only has six ingredients, and you can make a super delicious and a bit different dish!)

Salt, Hands, and a Japanese Potato Salad Hello Reader, It's Yukari! Salt and your hands can change everything you cook.(Stick around for Aric’s 1-minute chef’s tip!👨🏻🍳) But first, I want to take you back to a little Japanese kitchen, where I learned the real magic of cooking… “The Potato Salad That Changed My Perspective” I visited Terumi and enjoyed her warm "Omotenashi" until I moved to the US. I still call it "Terumi's Potato Salad" 💖 One evening, she made classic Japanese potato salad. I...

One Spoon, Big Change Hello Reader, It's Yukari! Today I’m thinking about the tiniest tool in the kitchen... a spoon, and how one taste can change everything you cook and share. It’s the thread that ties generosity to good food, the first nudge toward real hospitality. (Stick around for Aric’s chef tip at the end! 👨🏻🍳) But first… come with me to the kitchen where “Taste this” became the lesson I didn’t know I needed. “Taste This” Remember the Chawanmushi incident? That’s how I met Terumi, the...

A Whisper That Changed My Cooking. Plus Our $100 Grocery Challenge. Hello Reader, It's Yukari! Today, I want to rediscover what happened when Aric and I did $100 Grocery Challenge back in January 2025. (Remember? 🤣) Aric and I had fun doing it, and we learned some lessons along the way. I saved many things Aric talked about cooking during the time, and I can't wait to share his wisdom, too. But first... let me take you back to the kitchen that woke me up, kicked me out of bed, and taught me...
