🥊 What My Muay Thai Coach Taught Me About Cooking

Hello Reader, It's Yukari!

Do you meditate?

Because I don’t. 😅

But a few days ago in Muay Thai class, my coach said something that stuck with me:

“This is your time. It’s a beautiful, quiet moment to have.”

Muay Thai moves fast, but he meant we still needed to slow down, stay calm, and focus on the technique.

And somehow, that made me think about cooking.

Is Cooking Really Stressful or Just Not Worth the Effort?

We hear messages all the time:

You’re busy. 😫

Cooking is hard. 🥺

Let us do it for you. 🚚

Here’s a 15-minute recipe because that’s all the time you have. ⏳

And yes, convenience has its place.

I use it too.

But when food is only convenience, fuel, or a task, we lose something important.

We lose "the Quiet Moment."

Because cooking can give you that.

The sound of chopping.

The pause while the water boils.

The smell of something warm on the stove brings back a memory you didn’t even know you were carrying.

The Beautiful, Quiet Moment

Many of us have learned to see cooking as stressful or not worth the effort.

But sometimes, cooking is not just about getting dinner done.

Sometimes, it’s a few minutes to slow down.

To come back to yourself a little.

To make something with care.

To feel just a bit calmer, more confident, and more connected.

Maybe that’s why we care about this work.

Not just “quick and easy.”

Not just “healthy” or “cheap.”

But helping cooking feel a little more doable, and maybe even meaningful again.

So here’s something small to try this week:

The next time you cook, give yourself just 5 unhurried minutes.

Listen to the crack of the eggshell.

Watch the butter melt in the pan.

Notice that warm, familiar smell as breakfast comes together.

See how it feels...

Our New Instagram Reel 14-Day Challenge!

That's exactly why we’re kicking off a 14-Day Instagram Challenge starting April 7 over at @aricandyukari.

For 14 days, we’ll be sharing one video a day exploring questions like:

Is fresh cooking actually realistic in real life?

Can a home cook make these meals without feeling overwhelmed?

Why does cooking feel so hard in the first place?

You’ll see Aric cooking from scratch, frozen meal comparisons, and my honest perspective as a home cook still figuring things out in real life.

We don’t want it to be just pretty food on a screen.

We want a real conversation about why cooking is hard, and how it can feel possible.

Join us for the 14-Day Instagram Challenge starting April 7 at @aricandyukari!

Follow along with the daily videos, and if you want to join in, tag us in your posts or stories so we can cheer you on.

Will you join us?

And before you go, I’d love to know:

Because maybe what you need isn’t another perfect recipe.

Maybe you just need a little support… and your own "Beautiful, Quiet Moment."

Thanks for being at our Kitchen Table, on this cozy little corner of the internet.

We appreciate you following along and for letting us share not just what we cook but why we cook. 🧡

With gratitude and friendship,

Aric & Yukari

Hello Reader, It's Yukari! It’s March in Colorado, and somehow it’s already hot and dry. Our dish pit pup, Senna, is hiding inside, but our sous chef kitten, Ka-En the firecracker, is living his best life in the sunny window.Last Saturday, I attended a Muay Thai seminar to improve my timekeeping responsibility. I brought extra coffee and a notebook. I came home with a fried brain and one big reminder: You Learn by Doing It You don’t learn just by watching. You learn by doing. And that’s...

Hello Reader, It's Yukari! Colorado finally did it! Snow…after 40 days of absolutely nothing! ❄️Our Dish-Pit Pup, Senna, is thrilled… and also refusing to come inside unless I’m holding a dental chew like it’s a VIP pass. 🙃 That same stubborn joy reminds me of something I want to share today. 😱 A Small “I Panicked” Story (and Why It Matters for Cooking) Last weekend, I was a Muay Thai tournament timekeeper for the second year in a row. Hello Reader, It's Yukari! Hope you had a fabulous Valentine’s Day weekend. 🧡 Aric and I took a little break from work and had a “date day” we actually love...Pedicures together, happy hour…then he cooked me a full 3-course dinner at home. (Full transparency: this was Aric in chef-mode 😂 Our normal weeknights are much simpler.) How to make staying in feel like a treat (not a chore) We avoided crowded restaurants, loud music, and a prix fixe menu, and traded it for quality time, no...
